It is a truth universally acknowledged that interdisciplinary research is hard.

Sometimes, researchers might not know where to begin, though they believe that expertise external to their own field might be important. If so, some guidance through the relevant literature or introductions to the relevant people and institutions might be helpful.

Sometimes, researchers “talk past each other”, misunderstanding each other, perhaps without evne knowing it. If so, translation—or mediation—may be needed, not only when it comes to understanding one another’s methods and theories, but also one another’s interests and values.

And then there is the question of what fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration might look like, in any given case; what is required to achieve it; and how to turn an initial idea into a successful grant application and research project.
