Welcome

I am a social psychologist, and (sometimes…) theologian and philosopher. My research interests mainly revolve around religion, and especially psychological and evolutionary theories of religion, and the philosophical and theological issues involved in the scientific study of religion.

This website presents some of my academic and general audience work, and offers various resources for free (including measurement instruments like the Supernatural Belief Scale and the Existential Death Anxiety Scale and access to datasets).

My professional services as an interdisciplinary research consultant may also be contracted here.

Current Projects

I am currently involved in a few research projects, including:

From Despair to Hope: Interdisciplinary Theology in the service of Building Spiritual Capital, with Tom Greggs, and based at the Center for Theological Inquiry, Princeton. From Despair to Hope gathers two Senior Fellows and 25 other Fellows together to work on theologies of hope across particular content areas, including AI and tech, civics and politics, health, youth, and economics.

Beliefless Spirituality, led by Ryan Byerly (University of Sheffield). This project involves philosophers and psychologists working together to explore the possibility of spirituality and spiritual well-being without religious belief, but perhaps with other related psychological states and traits.
